With many programs available online, professional development offerings made easily accessible to healthcare workforce
SAN MARCOS, Calif., Feb. 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The California State University Institute for Palliative Care (www.csupalliativecare.org), located at Cal State San Marcos, announced its spring and summer calendar of courses aimed at bringing the best practices of palliative care to the healthcare community.
Helen McNeal, Executive Director of the Institute, said, "As chronic and serious conditions increase due to our aging population, America must have a workforce prepared to handle the growing demand for compassionate palliative care that goes hand-in-hand with curative treatment. Our cutting-edge palliative care courses are teaching nurses, social workers, chaplains and other healthcare professionals the latest and best practices in palliative care."
Many of the Institute's programs are fully online, while others offer a blend of classroom and online learning. In one of the Institute's program overview videos, curriculum developer and teacher Carma Erickson-Hurt, RN MSN, APRN, ACHPN, says, "I can honestly tell you that as someone who has taught both in the classroom and online, that I actually have more interaction within an online classroom than I ever do in a lecture format." That online interaction combined with flexibility and accessibility is why the Institute continues to experience such rapid growth.
Palliative Care Courses Being Offered This Spring/Summer:

RN Hospice and Palliative Care Nursing (CHPN) Certification Prep
As organizations like the Joint Commission, CMS and others look for health care organizations to deliver palliative care using professionals with recognized certifications, nurses working in palliative are recognizing the value of taking the NBCHPN RN Certification exam. There will be more focus on pain and symptom management and greater opportunity for practice test questions in this training. This program is offered in partnership with the Hospice & Palliative Nurses Association San Diego Chapter. The course is May 3-4 in San Diego.
Palliative Care Chaplaincy Specialty Certificate
The California State University Institute for Palliative Care and HealthCare Chaplaincy Network – two leaders in their fields – have created an online certificate course to support chaplains and other spiritual care providers with the delivery of palliative care to patients and their families in hospitals, hospices, long-term care facilities, and elsewhere.
