MakerSquare Training Hundreds of Software Engineers in Austin and San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- MakerSquare, a software developer boot camp business with schools in San Francisco and Austin, is offering an inaugural full ride scholarship to a qualified military veteran applicant. MakerSquare provides a 12-week immersive educational program designed to build software developers and help place graduates with companies in need of software designers and creators. Recipients of the MakerSquare Heroes Scholarship are awarded an education valued at $14,000 and earn an opportunity to join a workforce where demand and salaries are high.
There is a growing commitment by emerging companies to recognize the value of skilled servicemen and women and the competitive value they bring to the marketplaces.
"The U.S. Labor Department says unemployment among vets who joined the military after Sept. 11, 2001 is almost 20% higher than the civilian population," said Capt. Robert Dicks, founder and CEO of Texas based uRide, a green car service that hires military veterans as drivers. "Projections indicate it will only get worse with the war in Afghanistan winding down. Troop numbers are shrinking drastically and coming home. They've got to find work and clearly it's a struggle. These soldiers deserve better."
MakerSquare is taking the lead within their own industry to create greater awareness around the employment challenges Gulf War Era II veterans go through after their service ends.

In Austin, the average starting salary is approximately $70,000 per year and in San Francisco, it's closer to $100,000. We'd like to see other businesses in our market also offer full scholarships to returning vets. Unemployment numbers among military veterans have eased to 9% in 2013 from 9.9% in 2012, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The government is providing incentives, which include tax credits for businesses that employ Gulf War Era II veterans. It will, however, require a conscientious effort by all U.S. based companies, big and small, to lessen the sizeable gap between veteran and civilian employment numbers.
